New York's humor and imagination were on full display at the Easter Parade and Easter Bonnet Festival on Fifth Avenue. The tradition of making hats to wear on Easter Sunday started as an after-church fashion procession in the 1870s. But is has slowly evolved into a costume extravaganza where those with the most whimsical hats briefly become celebrities and curious onlookers the paparazzi.

This Sunday, a throng of New Yorkers and visitors alike will head to midtown to attend one of the city’s most anticipated and inspired celebrations: the Easter Parade and Easter Bonnet Festival.
Bedecked and bedazzled, half of the partygoers will mill about in front of St. Patrick’s Cathedral wearing beautifully crafted, handmade bonnets that defy the imagination (and gravity in some cases)—proof that some people are boundless when it comes to originality, humor and plain old holiday spirit.
And the other half? Well, they come to see what the first half is wearing and take a lot of pictures. And then there’s Patricia.

'Oh, those are fantastic! I want to see them! They're adorable! Let me fix your socks,'' Patricia Fox cries out when she spies Suzanne Golden's shoes, a pair of black and white Comme des Gar?s winkle pickers festooned with rhinestone buckles that serve as a counterpoint to the rest of Golden's black-and-white Junya Watanabe ensemble. Fox, who is wearing a veiled chapeau with a blossom brim, a 1950s sequined floral jacket, a chiffon dress with a hobble skirt and a pair of beaded gloves, is meeting Golden for the first time at a tea party I have organized at the Carlyle Hotel, an event I refer to (but not out loud) as a ''nutty-dressers'' luncheon....
